earlyYMYVONNE MONNETT

"Her voice is soft, but can't be ignored; there are no diva-style theatrics, but the smolder on 'Slow Boat to China,' the simple joy on 'What a Difference a Day Makes' and the cheek on 'Peel Me a Grape' show a range that plenty of more dramatic singers can't match." - Rick Massimo

Providence Rhode Island based jazz pianist, vocalist, educator and recording artist, Yvonne Monnett started her musical journey in her childhood home. Her father, a pianist and band leader, and mother, a vocalist both influenced Yvonne’s interest in music. At age 5, Yvonne’s tutelage was entrusted to her grandmother, a concert pianist.

In the 1970’s Yvonne began her professional career playing and singing in major hotels and clubs and at private and corporate parties in the Providence area. At the same time, she was honing her skills studying jazz piano with Diamond Centofanti and vocal technique with Anna Maria Saratelli. More recently she was fortunate to work with the late Mike Renzi to heighten her jazz piano chops.

Her extraordinary skill as an accompanist makes her first-call for numerous vocalists. She is revered by the likes of Angela Bacari, Amanda Carr, Billy Gilman, Nicolas King, Bob Mainelli, Shawnn Monteiro, Clay Osborne, Jeff Osborne, Daryl Sherman, Rose Weaver and Ida Zecco. She has shared the stage with Greg Abate, Dan Moretti, Harry Allen, Gray Sargent, and the late Dick Johnson. Yvonne has been first call for many music contractors including Ralph Suart, Paul Borelli, Bob Saraceno and Dick Lupino.

In 2004, Yvonne released her first CD “Thanks for the Memory” to critical acclaim. Rick Massimo of Providence Journal called the release “a collection of high class , black tie jazz standards . Her voice is soft, but can’t be ignored.” She brings her own meaning to each lyric and sings with joy and a pureness few can match. Her 2023 CD, “You Fascinate Me So,” pays tribute to Blossom Dearie, Yvonne’s source of inspiration for this project.

Besides playing regularly at venues all over RI, Yvonne has played at Scullers, Boston Harbor Hotel and Feinstein’s 54 Below in NYC. In 2002 Yvonne performed for President Bill Clinton and later that year accompanied singer, Billy Gilman, in a live performance on NBC’s Today show. While teaching voice privately,Yvonne also taught at Brown University as a Jazz Voice instructor in the Applied Music Program. Yvonne is a lifetime member of the Providence Federation of Musicians, local #198, and serves on its Executive Board.
